How Many Stray Animals Are There?

There are about 70 million stray animals living in the U.S. Of this 70 million, only about six to eight million cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters every year. More than 35% of cats are categorized as strays.That evens out to about five homeless animals for every homeless person in the U.S.According to the American Humane Association, the most common reasons why people relinquish or give away their dogs is because their place of residence does not allow pets , not enough time, divorce/death and behavior issues The most common reasons for cats are that they were not allowed in the residence, and allergies.The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances or family members. 28% of dogs are purchased from breeders, and 29% of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues.
